Your options in #MotorCareers

With over 150 job roles in the retail automotive industry there really is something for everyone.  So how do you choose what to do for your GCSE options and beyond?

Your options
At GCSE level there are no fixed grades or qualifications that you need as the main thing employers are looking for is passion and drive to learn.  However Maths, English and Science are all great subjects to take as well as Design Technology.  These support your communication, reading and writing skills as well as basic equations and measuring skills.

Your next steps
There are a number of options for school leavers including:

  1. Full time college - Full time at a college or training provider is around 2 and a half days a week learning the theory around the job which leaves you enough time to get a part time job or some valuable work experience.
  2. Apprenticeship - An apprenticeship, where you learn, work and earn all in one, is a great way to dive into the industry getting your hands on the vehicles and understanding work place behaviours while gaining practical real life experience. This is 5 days a week and you will either have ‘day release’ where you go to college 1 day a week every week or ‘block release’ where you stay at work for 3 months and then train intensively for a week or two. Find an Apprenticeship.
  3. A Levels and University - Surprisingly you don’t need an Engineering degree to work in retail automotive.  If you are looking at design or manufacturing then you would but once the vehicle has left the production line a Level 2-3 with additional training is fine.

Your progression routes
The Retail automotive industry is very unique with its possibilities and progression routes.  For example many CEO’s of our major brands started as apprentices in the industry!  See some of the potential progression routes on our Career Pathway Maps to plan out your career here.
